Are you missing the wilderness?

TV Shows to Watch if you Miss Yellowjackets

Season three is over, and season four won’t be around for at least another couple of years. However, whether you’re jonesing for more supernatural scares or just missing the teenage trauma of it all, there are more shows to fill the void left behind by the wilderness.

Servant (2019-2023)

Psychological horror created by Tony Basgallop (with showrunner M. Night Shyamalan) centres on the lives of Dorothy and Sean Turner, who welcome a new nanny into their home to care for their newborn son, Jericho. However, things quickly turn sinister when it’s revealed that Jericho is actually a lifelike “reborn” doll meant to help Dorothy cope with a devastating loss. The nanny’s arrival begins an unsettling chain of events, one that unravels a shocking, slow-burning mystery. Not for the faint-hearted, Servant explores themes of grief, faith, and psychological trauma while maintaining an air of supernatural ambiguity. Its claustrophobic cinematography and engaging characters keep audiences on their toes and questioning everything they witness in the Turner home while often rooting for this family to come together and overcome their fractured relationships.

Penelope (2024)

Praised for its compelling storytelling and strong performances, Penelope is a coming-of-age drama focusing on the title character, 16-year-old Penelope, who feels a disconnect from modern society and embarks on a journey of self-discovery. Losing herself in the unforgiving terrain of the wilderness, she battles the harsh reality of life in the great outdoors and learns to navigate the challenges of living in isolation. While this eight-episode TV series doesn’t have the supernatural elements associated heavily with Yellowjackets, it does portray the enduring need for survival, not only in body but also in mind. Co-created by Mel Eslyn and Mark Duplass, Penelope explores themes of self-reliance, the impact of technology on mental health, and a quest for the natural in an increasingly digital world.

One of Us Is Lying (2021 - 2022)

If you combine the breakfast club with a murder mystery, you would get something like One of Us Is Lying. Developed by Erica Saleh and based on the book of the same name by Karen M. McManus, the show begins with five students in detention, where one of them dies. With each student having their own motive against their former classmate, secrets begin to unravel as they all profess their innocence. One of Us Is Lying combines the elements of a classic teen drama with a gripping whodunit mystery, keeping the audience on edge with unexpected twists and dark revelations.

LOST (2004-2010)

If you asked someone to think of a TV show based around planes and the supernatural, Lost would be the first one that pops into their mind. Created by JJ Abrams and focusing on the lives of stranded plane passengers, each episode weaves in present-day island events with character flashbacks to reveal deep mysteries and personal tragedies. While initially focused on survival, the story quickly expands into a complex web of supernatural events, time travel, and rich character backstories. Lost captivated audiences for six seasons and ended in 2010 while still on a high with ratings. If you want a long-haul show to lose yourself in, it’s definitely worth jumping back into the lives of Flight 815.

Manifest (2018-2023)

The supernatural TV show Manifest follows the lives of the passengers of Flight 828, which mysteriously disappears mid-flight, only to reappear five and a half years later. While the world moved on without them, they haven’t aged a day. As the passengers try to reintegrate into a society which either worships or fears them, they begin to experience visions which lead them towards a larger cosmic plan tied to their fates. Created by Jeff Rake, Manifest was so beloved by its fans that while NBC cancelled the show after three seasons, Netflix was persuaded to give it its fourth, allowing all the stories to be completed. With its intriguing premise and characters, the suspenseful storytelling offers an exploration of fate, second chances, and unknown forces that could be shaping our lives.

FROM (2022-Present)

If you don’t like a scare, keep on scrolling because this show is a sci-fi horror and psychological drama through and through. Created by John Griffin, FROM centres around a seemingly ordinary (albeit creepy) town in America, which has become inescapable for anyone unfortunate enough to stumble upon it. By day, the residents fight for normalcy, and by night, they hide. Monstrous, humanoid creatures hunt them for fun, and the show doesn’t shy away from letting you witness every horrible event. During the first season, you can clearly see the inspiration Lost had on its story and character-driven storytelling; however, the later seasons ramp up the tension and expand upon the lore in a way that, while you may not be able to make sense of what’s happening just yet, dots begin to form and connections can be made far earlier than Lost allowed. It definitely feels as though the showrunners know where they're going with the story. If you're drawn to shows full of complex characters navigating impossible dilemmas under scary (and often crippling) constraints, get caught up now before season 4 arrives. Just maybe don't watch it before bed...
